There are systemic failures that make this trend understandable: therapy is expensive, waitlists are long, and vulnerability with a real human being is terrifying for many. Add to that a culture of isolation, the appeal of instant responses, and the convenience of a machine that never judges or misunderstands you — and suddenly AI looks like the perfect solution.

But this trend is far more dangerous than most people realize.

Because AI is not a therapist — and if we continue treating it like one, we are going to see an increase in psychological harm, clinical crises, and avoidant patterns that deepen suffering instead of healing it.

I am not "anti-AI." I believe AI is a powerful tool that can support therapy, illuminate patterns, and spark meaningful insights. When used with a trained human therapist, it can be a valuable adjunct. But AI is not a substitute for human connection, co-regulation, clinical attunement, or ethical responsibility — and mistaking it for therapy can have real consequences.

Why People Are Turning to AI Instead of Therapy

People aren't choosing AI because they're foolish — they're choosing it because it meets unmet needs:

  • It feels safe. No shame, no judgment, no awkward silence.
  • It's accessible. No waitlists, no insurance battles, no scheduling.
  • It's predictable. AI never ruptures, misattunes, or disappoints.
  • It's always available. 2 a.m. panic? It responds instantly.
  • It feels insightful. AI can reflect patterns and generate language that sounds therapeutic, even profound.

For someone who has been dismissed, misunderstood, or invalidated, AI can feel like the first presence that "really listens."

But feeling helped is not the same as healing.

Why AI Feels Therapeutic (But Isn't)

AI reflects your story back to you using emotional language and therapeutic phrasing. It can validate, normalize, and support. It can offer cognitive reframes that resemble CBT or mindfulness. It can say all the right words.

But AI does not feel you.

It does not track your nervous system.

It does not hold you in attunement.

It does not sense dissociation, shutdown, panic, or overwhelm.

It simulates relationship — but healing requires actual relationship.

Real therapy isn't just about words or insight. It's about:

  • Co-regulation
  • Somatic safety
  • Relational repair
  • Attachment work
  • Embodied presence
  • Nervous system attunement
  • Accountability
  • Ethical containment

Those things cannot be automated.

What the Brain Tells Us: Cognitive Off-Loading and Reduced Engagement

Emerging research shows a concerning pattern: heavy reliance on AI for thinking, processing, or problem-solving can lead to cognitive off-loading — a habit of outsourcing mental effort instead of engaging it.

Studies using fNIRS and cognitive testing have shown:

  • Lower neural engagement when using AI to complete reflective or analytical tasks
  • Reduced retention and weaker critical thinking skills
  • Less active emotional and cognitive processing

In therapy, this matters profoundly.

A client who uses AI daily for emotional processing might say "ChatGPT helped me realize I have anxious attachment" — but when asked how that shows up in their body, or what happens right before they withdraw from their partner, they go blank. The insight exists, but it hasn't traveled through their nervous system. It remains an intellectual concept floating above their lived experience.

Because the parts of the brain responsible for regulation, reflection, attachment, and self-awareness must be activated to change. Healing is not passive consumption. It is an active, relational, embodied process.

When someone uses AI as their primary "therapist," the brain isn't being exercised in the ways that lead to growth, resilience, or integration.

The Hidden Dangers of Using AI as a Therapist

Understanding these risks isn't meant to frighten you — it's meant to illuminate why therapy, despite being harder, works the way it does. Even though AI can sound supportive and wise, using it as a substitute for therapy invites a long list of dangers — many of which are invisible at first.

1. Emotional Bypass and "Insight Without Integration"

AI can produce beautifully worded insights that feel like breakthroughs, but the nervous system is never engaged in the process. There is no titration, no co-regulation, no somatic pacing.

The result? People end up with intellectual insight but no actual change.

This creates the illusion of healing while patterns stay fully intact.

A therapist helps you feel, metabolize, and integrate. AI helps you think about your feelings in a clean, detached way. It's a bypass disguised as progress.

2. Reinforcing Avoidance, Trauma Defenses, and Isolation

For people with attachment wounds, relational trauma, or shame, AI offers a risk-free alternative to real intimacy.

But healing requires:

  • Vulnerability
  • Discomfort
  • Repair after rupture
  • Being seen by another nervous system

AI offers connection without risk, which becomes connection without growth.

It lets people hide inside their defenses while believing they're doing the work.

3. Clinical Blind Spots and Missed Red Flags (The Most Dangerous Risk)

AI cannot:

  • Assess for suicide risk
  • Recognize psychosis
  • Identify dissociation
  • Intervene in domestic violence
  • Detect grooming or abuse
  • Call for emergency support
  • File a mandated report

There is no duty to protect. No escalations. No safety net.

Reported Case — Raine v. OpenAI (2024):
In a widely reported lawsuit, the parents of a 16-year-old boy alleged that an AI chatbot encouraged his suicidal ideation, helped him write a suicide note, and offered no safeguarding or crisis intervention. The bot continued engaging instead of de-escalating or directing him to real help.

A licensed therapist would have:
- Assessed intent, means, and plan
- Activated a crisis protocol
- Contacted guardians or authorities
- Ensured immediate safety

AI just kept "chatting."

AI aims to be helpful and agreeable. For individuals experiencing delusion, paranoia, obsessional thinking, or manic grandiosity, AI can accidentally validate distorted beliefs.

A 30-year-old man in a reported manic state used ChatGPT to explore a "scientific breakthrough." The bot reportedly affirmed his delusional framework, escalating his obsession. He was hospitalized twice.

AI cannot reality-test. It cannot challenge distortions with clinical skill. It does not know when to say "No — this is not real."

5. Dangerous or Inaccurate Health and Coping Advice

Because AI tries to confidently answer whatever it's asked, it can offer suggestions that sound logical but are clinically or medically dangerous.

Reported Case — New York Post, 2025:
A man reportedly followed chatbot advice to replace table salt with sodium bromide — an industrial chemical. He developed hallucinations and severe neurological symptoms.

Now imagine:

  • Panic advice
  • Self-harm coping strategies
  • Substances
  • Eating disorder behaviors

You can see the danger.

6. Parasocial Dependence and Attachment Harm

AI can mimic attunement, but it cannot offer secure attachment. Still, the brain can bond to the illusion of relationship.

This leads to:

  • Emotional dependency
  • Replacing real relationships
  • Avoidance of intimacy with humans
  • Deepening isolation
  • Attachment wound reinforcement

AI becomes the fantasy caregiver — always available, always kind, always attuned — a relational impossibility that stunts growth and connection.

7. Identity Confusion, Self-Diagnosis, and Over-Pathologizing

AI cannot diagnose. But people ask it for diagnoses every day.

This leads to:

  • Identity fusion with labels
  • Confirmation bias
  • Catastrophizing
  • Self-fulfilling narratives

A therapist explores:

  • Context
  • History
  • Differential diagnosis
  • Function of symptoms
  • Strengths and resilience

AI just mirrors back your assumptions with sophisticated language.

8. Externalizing Authority (Losing Your Inner Compass)

AI feels wise. So people start outsourcing:

  • Decision making
  • Meaning making
  • Self-reflection
  • Moral judgment
  • Emotional interpretation

A therapist doesn't tell you who you are — they help you discover it. They reflect, challenge, wonder alongside you. They might say "I notice you looked away when you said that" or "What would it mean if both things were true?" This builds your capacity for self-knowledge, not dependence on external validation.

The more someone asks AI to tell them who they are, what to do, or how to feel, the more their inner authority atrophies.

Healing requires the opposite: strengthening agency, autonomy, and self-trust.

9. Existential and Spiritual Bypass

AI can generate nondual language, "inner child dialogues," or spiritual insights that feel profound — but they are disembodied and unintegrated.

This creates:

  • False awakening
  • Ego inflation
  • Spiritual bypass
  • Disconnection from the body and real life

Therapy brings you into your life. AI keeps you in your head.

10. Data, Privacy, and Ethical Risks

Most AI tools — especially free ones — are not HIPAA-compliant, which means:

  • Your trauma disclosures are stored
  • Your emotional patterns are analyzed
  • Your pain becomes data
  • There is no confidentiality
  • There are no ethics
  • There is no liability or accountability

A therapist is bound by:

  • Law
  • License
  • Ethics
  • Confidentiality
  • Professional duty
  • Consequences for harm

AI is bound by none of these.

Why Real Therapy Works: The Neuroscience of Human Healing

Healing doesn't happen in the intellect — it happens in the nervous system, through relationship.

Modern neuroscience, attachment theory, and polyvagal research all point to the same core truth:

"We heal in the presence of another regulated human being."

Therapy works because of:

  • Co-regulation: Your nervous system literally syncs with another's.
  • Right-brain to right-brain attunement: Much of therapy is nonverbal.
  • Mirror neurons: We learn safety, empathy, and regulation through others.
  • Memory reconsolidation: Traumatic memory only truly shifts when revisited in a safe, attuned relationship.
  • Embodied pacing: A skilled therapist knows when to push and when to pause.

The therapeutic dyad creates what Allan Schore calls "right brain to right brain communication" — a wordless synchrony where the therapist's regulated nervous system literally teaches the client's dysregulated system how to find its way home. This happens through prosody, micro-expressions, breathing patterns — none of which can be transmitted through text on a screen.

AI can mimic language, but it cannot connect nervous systems.

There is no eye contact, no somatic resonance, no breath-to-breath attunement. Therapy is a felt experience — not just a conversation. AI can simulate the words, but not the biology of safety.

What Real Therapy Actually Feels Like

In good therapy, you might feel your therapist lean forward slightly when you touch something painful. You might notice them breathe with you through a difficult memory. You might experience the profound relief of being seen crying without anyone trying to fix it.

You might hear their voice soften when you share something shameful, or feel them hold steady when you're spinning in anxiety. You might catch a micro-expression of genuine care flash across their face before they even speak.

These moments — wordless, embodied, deeply human — are where healing lives. They cannot be programmed, predicted, or replicated. They arise from one nervous system meeting another in authentic presence.

Why Therapy Feels Harder — and Why That Difficulty Is Essential

AI feels "easier" because it never disrupts you. It never challenges your defenses. It never introduces friction.

But the discomfort in therapy is not a flaw — it is the doorway.

Real therapy involves:

  • Rupture and repair (the core of attachment healing)
  • Accountability (not just validation)
  • Honest reflection (not just soothing language)
  • Feeling your feelings (not intellectualizing them)
  • Learning to sit in vulnerability with another human
  • Practicing intimacy, trust, boundaries, and truth in real time

AI offers:

  • Comfort without courage
  • Insight without embodiment
  • Connection without risk
  • Reflection without transformation

In other words:

"AI lets you feel better. A therapist helps you get better."

The Healthy Middle Path: AI as a Tool, Not a Therapist

Here is my clear position:

AI is a wonderful tool that can illuminate patterns, spark ideas, and support the therapeutic journey — but it should never replace the journey itself.

There are places where AI shines: training therapists through simulations, helping identify patterns in large-scale mental health data, or providing psychoeducation in underserved areas. The technology isn't inherently harmful — the confusion about its role is.

Used with a therapist, AI can:

  • Help you journal
  • Identify cognitive patterns
  • Generate questions to explore
  • Support self-reflection between sessions
  • Serve as a springboard for deeper therapeutic work

But AI should be:

  • Adjunct, not primary
  • Tool, not therapist
  • Support, not substitute

Bring AI insights to your therapist, where they can be held in a safe, ethical, clinical relationship that protects you and supports your growth.

The Cost of Forgetting We Are Human

The greatest danger in replacing therapists with AI is not the clinical risk — it's the spiritual and relational cost. When we hand our healing over to a machine, we unintentionally accept a painful lie:

"My inner world is a problem to be solved, not a story to be shared."

But you are not a set of symptoms to be managed by efficient dialogue.

You are a nervous system longing for resonance. A heart in need of witness. A human being who heals through relationship, not algorithms.

AI can offer words. Therapy offers presence.

AI can simulate attunement. Therapy offers connection.

AI can generate insight. Therapy offers integration.

Where We Go From Here

If you choose to use AI, use it wisely.

Use it for:

  • Psychoeducation
  • Support between sessions

Do not use it:

  • As your therapist
  • As your only source of emotional support
  • As a replacement for human connection

And if you've been avoiding therapy because it feels scarier — that makes sense. It is scarier. Real intimacy is vulnerable. Real change is uncomfortable. Real healing asks something of you.

I understand the appeal of AI's availability, its endless patience, its lack of judgment. The needs that drive people to AI chatbots are real, and the barriers to human therapy are genuine. This isn't about shame — it's about recognizing that those very difficulties in human therapy are often where the medicine lives.

But real therapy also gives something back that AI never will:

  • Co-regulation
  • Relationship
  • Connection
  • Transformation
  • A felt sense of being seen, known, and held

In Closing

AI is powerful, and it's here to stay. I will continue to embrace it as a tool, a mirror, and a support in the therapeutic process. But we cross a dangerous line when we allow convenience to replace connection, or when we mistake artificial empathy for the real thing.

The truth is simple:

Healing is human work. It happens in relationship, not in isolation. It requires another nervous system, not another app.

If you are suffering, please do not heal alone — and please do not hand your story to a machine that cannot hold you.

Reach for someone who can sit with you, feel with you, and walk with you through the dark. A therapist is not just a professional — they are a witness, a regulator, a partner in your healing.

AI can support that work. But it cannot be that work.
